Wellspring Gardens began in 2004 in the backyard of a Lakeland, Florida home and has grown into a major e-commerce business, recently celebrating its 500,000th online order. Founder Donovan K. Baltich, who studied horticulture at Florida Southern College, started the business after being laid off in 2003. He and his wife, Dana, ran the company from their back porch, avoiding debt and ownership dilution, until acquiring a dedicated fulfillment center in 2019. The company thrived amidst the 2020 boom in the specialty live plant market, catering to a renewed interest in self-sufficiency.

The Challenges
